Using Technology to Prevent Illness Rather Than Cure It | Happyliving.com   “Act before things exist; manage them before there is disorder.”
(Lao Tzu)

I recently began an experiment with personalized medicine to find out how I can use technology to prevent illness rather than cure it after getting sick. James FitzGerald (The Body Whisperer) introduced me to his doctor, Dr. Jeoff Drobot of The American Center for Biological Medicine. I took what felt like every diagnostic test imaginable, as outlined below. Medical testing lets me get out in front of big problems before they occur. Being proactive rather than reactive helps me prevent illness rather than correct it.

Tests

InBody 520 This is an in-depth body composition analysis to measure my basal metabolic rate, body water balance, body mass index (BMI), percentage of body fat, and segmental lean analysis to see if my body mass is balanced.

MyMedLab I took a comprehensive panel of blood tests including a General Health ScreenComplete Blood Count (CBC) with Differential, and NMR LipoProfile for measuring cholesterol particle size.

Zyto Biosurvey This is scan technology that determines possible food stressors and assesses the health of my organs and glands.

Meridian Autonomic Assessment Report shows the health of my arteries and my heart rate variability.

DUTCH Hormone Test measures my body’s ability to create the hormones I need for optimal health.

Doctor’s Data Comprehensive Stool Analysis tests for gastrointestinal disorders including persistent diarrhea, constipation, bloating, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome and malabsorption.

SpectraCell Laboratories Telomere Test determines the length of my telomeres in relation to my age.  Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of our chromosomes. They protect our DNA from damage in the same way that the plastic ends of shoelaces protect against the material unraveling. As we age, our telomeres do naturally shorten and fray, but poor health and nutrition can accelerate the process[1].

Diagnosis

As I walked into the doctor’s office for the test results, I was feeling pretty confident. I take my fitness, wellbeing and nutrition seriously and I feel in very good shape for my age. To my surprise, red flags indicating that my nervous system is inflamed showed up in nearly every test. Inflammation is preventing my body from producing the hormones I need for optimal health. In fact, things were so bad that my doc said my anabolic hormone levels are, “half of shitty.” That’s exactly what he said! He told me that my health has been damaged from years of chronic stress. My metabolic system is out of whack, which if left unaddressed will ultimately lead to sickness and disease.

In my post, Are Bad Inputs Making You Sick & Tired? I wrote:

“… chronic stress, that is stress persisting for a long time or constantly recurring, is largely responsible for what Dr. Leona Allen calls the new millennium diseases: heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, dementia, depression, autism, ADHD, ALS, and cancer.”

None of these are acceptable outcomes for me. I have too much living left to do. I have a Viking Funeral[2] in mind for myself in 2064 and I’m not planning on being done with this physical body any sooner than that.

So, this testing, which began as a mixture of curiosity and a personal interest in medical diagnostic tools, has turned out to be the critical process which could save my health, and even my life.

And now that I’m armed with this knowledge, I intend to take action to turn things around and help my body heal.

Actions

Here is my plan of action to relax my nervous system and restore my anabolic hormones to optimal levels.

The doc prescribed three natural supplements that I take every morning. They are:

  • Nergy Fuel (a proprietary blend created by my doc) to increase my energy
  • DHEA 5mg to restore my anabolic hormone levels
  • Lavella gel capsules, containing lavender essential oil, to promote relaxation and calm my nervous system

In addition, I have added two lifestyle changes. They are:

  • Daily ‘10 minute rests’ where I lie on my back with my feet up on a chair and quietly listen to soothing music.
  • Fasting for 12 hours each night at least 4 days per week, which is recommended to reduce inflammation.

Results (already?)

Using Technology to Prevent Illness Rather Than Cure It | Happyliving.comAfter a few days, I began to feel a little more relaxed. It surprised me though, that I could see evidence that my body was ‘actually’ more relaxed.

This chart shows my average resting heart from February 7 through March 8, 2016. On February 7 it was 67 beats per minute (bpm).  On February 23 it was 66 bpm. On February 24, I started with the supplements and my resting heart rate began a steady drop. By March 8 it was down to 58 bpm.

As you can imagine, my terrible test results were quite a shock. But I’m so glad I took the tests, and that I now know where I stand, healthwise. Knowledge is power – if you act on it, of course. I am excited about the initial improvements I’ve seen under my ‘relax and restore’ plan of action so far, and I’m looking forward to seeing further progress as I continue with it. I have a follow up with my doc in two months to measure this, and, of course, I will share the results with you. I hope that my story has inspired you to get a comprehensive health check of your own, too.
