“At some point, human intelligence became collective and cumulative in a way that happened to no other animal.[1]
(Matt Ridley)

Collective intelligence is always greater than individual intelligence.[2]

This important life lesson has been responsible for most of my professional successes. In my former life, I interviewed workers in companies to understand the various complex processes of their jobs. I then led design sessions with their technology teams to automate as many of those processes as possible. Following this I went back to the workers for input and approval, then back to the tech teams… and so on. Using the collective intelligence of the entire group of people enabled us to capture the best-practices in software that precisely fitted their needs, helped them do their work more effectively, and saved their companies money.

Collective intelligence is also helping us here at Happy Living. Today’s guest post by Hannah George is a perfect example. Let me explain. Several months ago, I received this email:

Hey There,

I’m Hannah from Fixyourskin.

I was looking for some tips about skin care and found your post – 200-Day Face Lotion Experiment. This looks great!

I’m writing to you because I have just published an infographic, 14 Potent Vitamins for Younger and Healthier Skin, that I feel would look great on your website.

Do let me know if you like it enough to post on your website.

Keep being awesome with Happyliving.com!

Thanks!

Hannah

Well, I loved it.

It made the complex process of nutrition and skin care easier for me to understand. I was reminded that our skin is the largest organ of the human body and one that I don’t pay enough attention too. Apparently I am not the only one, as FIXYOURSKIN estimates, “65% of all the people in the world have some sort of skin disorder either due to lack of nutrition or attention.” It also reminded me that collective intelligence is always greater than individual intelligence. Hannah’s guide was compiled using the collective intelligence from seven different skin authorities.

I want to thank Hannah for capturing best-practices in skin care in one detailed, beautiful and informative infographic to help us pay attention to, and to take better care of, our skin.
