Over the summer, a series of inspirations, events, connections, and hours of reflection led me to discovering my Dharma, though I didn’t know to call it that at the time.
The author of The Five Dharma Types and teacher at the renowned Ayurvedic Institute, Simon Chokoisky, defines Dharma as our purpose in life. Our Dharma is the “path” we are meant to walk, our reason for being on this planet.
Simon created a simple self-test that helps you discover your Dharma Type. He explains that for individuals living their innate Dharma Type, it’s like “dancing to the rhythm of their lives.”
It took me 54 years and ten jobs to realize my purpose, while Simon’s Dharma Test revealed it in five minutes. My Dharma Type is “Educator/Merchant” and my purpose is to enlighten others about health and wellbeing through writing.
Writing a Book Fits Who I Am
Earlier this year, I stumbled upon my Dharma Type when I decided to write my first book about turning inspiration into action.
Writing a book is a perfect fit for my mission to improve the health and wellbeing of the world, one person at a time. It provides another way for me to give back some of what I have been given. It touches my heart’s desire to help others.
Writing a book fits our business strategy at Happy Living. We are focused on the 3 C’s: creating content through writing, building our community, and making connections with like-minded people and businesses. Writing a book will help each of these pillars. It also fits another business objective, which is to share the message of turning inspiration into action through speaking engagements.
Writing a book fits my philosophy for lifelong work. Working helps me provide for my family, it feeds my soul, and it makes me happy. I intend to work for the rest of my life.
Finally, writing a book fits my personal goal to digitize everything I can. Technology is changing how we live, work, and communicate. I am determined to digitize as many ideas, information, products, and services that help me live a happy and healthy life so I may easily share them with others.
Writing a Book Fits Who I Want to Become
As I reflected on what it means to write a book, the idea of writing one book evolved into a new lifelong commitment to become an author.
Becoming an author touches my heartstrings, my business-strings, my financial-strings, and even my personal-strings. It is anchored to who I am and what I want. Realizing this was like discovering what I was meant to do.
Wondering Why It Matters?
I recently wrote about my practice of reflection, which is my way of trying to discover the inner being that is my unique soul. Reflection is a mindfulness practice that helps me slow down, quiet my mind and listen to my heart. It helps me know who I am and what is important to me. I am learning to follow my heart because it knows where my happiness lies.
I wonder if my practice of reflection has been guiding me to recognize the Dharma Type already within me.
Dr. Wayne Dyer made a movie about rediscovering the magical source that exists within all of us. The Shift is about connecting to the energy that takes care of everything. Through my studies of Dr. Dyer’s work, I have begun to call this energy the “power of the heart.” Dr. Dyer calls it the “music you were meant to play.”
I wonder if Dr. Dyer’s message is about reviving the Dharma Type inside us that we knew in our youth. These concepts sound similar to me:
“Playing the music you were meant to play.” (Dr. Dyer)
“Dancing to the rhythm of your life.” (Simon Chokoisky)
